Aric Claydon, weary and in the foulest of moods, arrives in Northumberland from Normandy to claim his Saxon bride-Lady Danielle- almost a year late. The girl is far from a ravishing beauty, nursing a small affliction and other irksome habits. Yet, compelled by a knight’s oath and loyalty to his king, Aric performs his duty. The Lady Danielle is a means to an end to complete his gain and if he's lucky, bless him with an heir and nothing more. Soon enough Aric learns his new bride is not as timid as he first thought, but mysterious and with secrets of her own. Even as he gives in to the fiery passion she wields, he vows she will never hold his heart. But when danger and treachery abound he will stop at nothing to protect her... The Lady Danielle resigns herself to the fact that she must marry the Norman warrior with hope the formidable man will be the end to her silent suffering and peace will finally come to her people. Yet all hopes of salvation are dashed when the handsome warrior arrives in the night and takes one look at her. Danielle knows a man like Aric could never love or offer her comfort, but she is determined to make the most of it and prove to him that there is room for her love in his warrior’s heart.

Amber Dane breathes new life into the medieval romance novel. Her characters stay true to who they are, even as they grow. The scenery is descript, but doesn't bog down the chapters. And one particular villain involved is quite "peculiar". <-- If you read this, you will understand my reference. :o)Aric is the brutish, strong, authoritive knight in this first installment of the series. And he couldn't have been better. Danielle is silent, yet strong, stubborn, yet giving and loving. The way Danielle blooms under the callused hand of a dark, rough, battle seasoned warrior is beautiful to read. And the way Aric remains all of those things, but still is able to grow into such an amazing hero is fantastic.
Though I'm not expert, the dialogue and old world English were done so well. In fact, I didn't once have to 'think' about what a certain word or phrase meant. Ms. Dane magically cast her words so that even an old world begginer - such as myself - could understand without one stumble.
There were a couple of small editing issues: incorrect words, doubled up word areas, but they were very few and far between. Bravo on doing such a great job on editing your self published work. It's hard to find a self pub with such great editing.
Overall, I truly love this book and cannot wait for Rourke's story to follow. However, I have to ask myself - "How will Amber Dane make me fall in love with her next hero and heroine, as much as I love Aric and Danielle?" I don't know if she can, but I think she should release book 2 so I can find out. :o)

Gem of Gravane The Northern Knights Series Volume 1 Amber Dane 9781481135856 Books Reviews
A great book. I would give it a 4.5 stars. Aric is a harden Norman warrior that has no room in his life for love. He figures his mistress will live with him after his marriage to a Saxon woman the King William is making him marry for the land. He fights his attraction to Danielle from the start. At first he is rude to her during the day, and after a fight tells her she is not really to talk to him unless it is a matter or importance. She is there only for him to bed and due her duty of getting a heir. She is to obey his orders and he does not need to discuss anything to do with running the castle or anything else with her. Danielle was treated badly by her father. He hated her and when he died he left her cousin Thomas to be her guardian. Thomas and his sister treated her even worse than her father. They called her fat and told her she was ugly all the time as well. She also has a limp from an accident when she was younger. She has a hard time believing that her husband would want her. Her feeling are hurt a lot, and she does cries more than normal. Here are a lot of misunderstandings at first and Aric being the warrior won't set them right as he thinks he does not need to explain anything to her. Of course his feeling for her keep getting in the way and you see him change in how he treats her. Hopefully that description will not make you think he is a jerk as he has his moments of tenderness, and he does change. He is just bullheaded at first.
Sex content is around medium - light. I saw the author listed on and erotica website, but these are not even close.
I can't believe that this is the author's first book. She writes so flawlessly that I feel I'm in the story along with the other characters. My rule of thumb in gauging a good read is whether or not the author catches my interest within the first few paragraphs. I have sifted through hundreds, and I mean HUNDREDS of romance novels over the years and this technique rarely fails. This novel got me at the beginning and held my interest to the very last word. I want a feisty strong heroine who is smart but also unique. So many medieval romance heroines are just waiting for the hunky hero to save them but not in this case. This heroine is a bit on the chunky side with a bad knee, a bit of an attitude and lots of secrets who has to work around a violent thieving relative. I'll even allow for her tendency to so frequently dissolve into "happy" tears.
Rourke, The Dark Axe, was introduced in this novel and I am DYING DYING DYING to read his story. Can't wait until its release date. Ms. Dane, please give your readers a release date so I can Pre-Order it.
I'm not going to lie. I had serious concerns when the first sentence of the first chapter had editing problems. This was an unfortunate placement because often I completely dismiss books that have such blatant errors so early on. However, I decided that the premise of the story had promise and pushed onward despite what I would normally consider sloppy editing. Yes, there are numerous editing issues in this book. Get over it! I did and I guarantee that I'm a snob about that particular issue! The interactions between Aric and Danielle are sweet, frustrating, funny, and interesting. Clearly Aric had some control issues at first; however, I enjoyed the process of Danielle breaking down his preconceived ideas little by little. Balwain adds depth to the picture of Aric. His friendship provides some insight as to why Aric comes across as a bully and a cretin in the beginning. I think that adding a second, intertwining story line between Balwain and Edie would have made an already good novel much better. Perhaps in the future Ms. Dane will consider this? I would hope that she does, because I plan to purchase more of her work in the future. I will say that the "peculiar" Thomas was a little too obvious. When it was first mentioned, I understood the issue immediately. He did add a wonderful dimension of humor though! This book will grab your attention and help you pass a rainy afternoon very enjoyably! Grab a cozy blanket, a cup of hot apple cider, this book, and you have the makings of a perfect weekend afternoon.
