This was another book I really wanted to like and based on the reviews, I was sure it would be a winner. It wasn't. Besides the fact it was slow moving, at times there were short, choppy sentences, or long, rambling descriptions and the characters weren't well developed at all. I struggled to keep reading.I borrow this from another review but it fits this book perfectly."I'm sure that some of the very positive reviews are written by the author's friends. But if they were true friends they wouldn't let her embarrass herself on such a global scale and without all those rather suspicious five-star reviews."

I enjoyed reading this book. Would love to read more about the German's life in America with more scenic images. Wonderfully unique story line.
A great, great book set in the 1850's about the trials and tribulations of coming to America from Germany.

Great story line! Very interesting story of a young German couple immigrating to America in the 1800's. The hardships, obsticals, and the adjustments of a young German family in a new untamed country kept me reading. I didn't want to put it down! Anxious for more books by this author!
This is a great first novel from a talented new author. Lesli has the gift of drawing readers into her book with interesting characters and a compelling story line. The blend of characterization, history, and romance makes this a book you want to keep reading...to find out what happens next.

A young couple leaving it all behind to start a new life in Texas. Loved the story. Recommend the entire series. Each one builds on the last, while developing a different main character we already have been introduced to. Her story telling improved with each book as well. Don't let the negative reviews discourage you from reading this book. Yes it was her first book and could have benefited from an editor but overall it's a good story and so are her other books. I look forward to reading more books from this author about life in Texas in the late 1800s. I fell in love with Hanna and Johan, and Raphie and John, and Marcum and Melissa!
